Captain Karl K. presents a lucid and informative perspective on deciding whether to take the SAT or ACT exam. I am a tutor and college counselor, and I encourage my students to take both exams as well. Interestingly, where Captain Karl K. states that students are often surprised to learn that their percentile ranks with the ACT are no different from that of their SAT results, I have found that a majority of my students actually do experience an increase in percentile ranking with the ACT. Naturally, I would not presume to extrapolate to the general student population, based solely upon my personal experiences, but this is certainly something to consider. In addition, while Captain Karl K.'s statement that the SAT is arguably a better indicator of college success than the ACT, the immediate concern for the high school applicant is, first and foremost, overcoming the admission's hurdle to college entry. For more background information on these two standardized tests, Top-Tier Tutoring has released a podcast: http://toptiertutoringmedia.com/act-versus-sat-whats-best-for-you/.

I was a teacher and now own my own tutoring business. I recommend to all my students to take both the ACT and the SAT as that is what I did and it seemed to be the ticket. As far as my opinion is stated although I do believe they should take both. The ACT always seems to be easier for most students. I believe it is the way the questions are worded. From what I have seen the questions on the ACT cater to a younger less intense audience.

The ACT has a science section which some people tend to score well on. If science is your strong point, take the ACT.
